Castle News April 2017
We were all very saddened by the death after a short illness of our Immediate Past President John Cranston. John contributed an enormous amount to the Rotary Club of Kimbolton Castle over many years and was a great friend to many members. It was I am sure comforting for his family to see so many members and their partners at his funeral.
In response to the call for support to help those suffering from famine and disease in the Horn of Africa the Club was moved to donate £2000 to the UK Disaster Emergency Committee ‘s East Africa Appeal fund.
Three prospective members attended the Membership Information evening with a number expressing interest in joining.
‘Local Accents & Dialects’ – a fascinating talk delivered by Professor Michael McCarthy, focussed particularly on simple transpositions commonly found in the region, eg we weren’t and I wasn’t might have morphed to we wasn’t and I weren’t.
A magnificent fund raising spring luncheon on the hottest day of the year so far, well organised and expertly hosted by Nick and Gill Monsell raised in excess of £1500 for Rotary supported good causes and charities.
A select group of members pruned the roses in Kimbolton churchyard. Further work in a local sensory garden is being scoped.
Our very own, highly respected Zelda Gunn was the subject of the Club version of Desert Island Discs, relaying with great clarity key life events with associated and meaningful compositions; expertly hosted once more by Graham and Jackie Peace.
Kimbolton Country Fayre and Classic Car Show – 9th July
Both Heavy horses and Beagles have been secured for this year’s Fayre. These attractions join those already secured such as a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and around 1000 Classic cars, The Sealed Knot will be re-enacting an episode from the Civil War. In addition to the usual popular attractions such as the Galaxy Big Band, we have Morris Dancers, and for children, inflatables and the Millar’s Ark Mobile Farm. We are also expecting well over 70 stalls and stands. The Food court, Tea tent and Beer tent will ensure a wide range of tastes are catered for.
